How To Access Data On Old Hard Drives

Recover Data From Old Hard Drives

A lot of us have old hard drives laying around from desktop computers or laptops that will not power on or Windows blows up and you want to recover data or access the hard drive.

With a versatile desktop computer you can probably open the cover, get the right cable and hook it up.

But that may make you uncomfortable, is a hassle, or just won’t work if you have a laptop. Or maybe you don’t have the adapter to connect an old IDE laptop hard drive to a desktop IDE cable.

The Solution Is Cheap And Easy

With a Vantec USB Hard drive adapter, you can easily access the data on any working IDE or SATA hard drive, whether 2.5″ laptopa IDE or 3.5″ desktop IDE. The adapter even comes with a power supply for the drives that require it.

data-recovery-with-vantec-usb-hard-drive-adapterSimply connect up the hard drive you want to access the data on to the Vantec adapter and plug in the adapter’s USB cable into your P.C.

If not recognized, there are instructions with the adapter to get the proper sequence for compatibility with stubborn computers.

Often you want the old hard drive powered up and running BEFORE powering on the recovery PC.

The old hard drive will show up just like any external hard drive would as an additional drive letter on your PC.

If you have trouble, check the device manager and see if the drive is recognized but Windows has either not assigned a drive letter to it or perhaps issued a conflicting drive letter, perhaps with a network drive. (Windows should know better, but often it doesn’t).

Here is a video I did to show you how to fix USB drive letter missing.

Below is a video showing the Vantec USB hard drive adapter in action:

Have you looked in device manager to see if the drive is recognized, but just needs a drive letter assigned?
