Do Your Taxes Online or Software Download With H&R Block
Every year about this time things start getting a little crazy for me because it’s time to do your 2012 income taxes.

And since everyone I know knows my background in accounting, taxes and computers, they (correctly) presume that I do tax preparation on the computer.
For years the only option was to buy tax software in a package, install onto your computer and compute your taxes, print the forms, etc – you know the drill.
(And either WRITE THAT PAINFUL CHECK or rejoice at your REFUND!)

Then a number of years ago the option came along to do your taxes online without ever installing the tax software onto your computer.
The advantage to doing your taxes online is that it’s fast, easy, simple. The disadvantage is that it does not give you the same options for “what-if” analysis and tax planning. It’s also better to have the tax software installed on your local computer if you have several tax returns to do and they might be done over the course of several weeks.
The last couple of years it has even been possible to do your Federal taxes online for free (if you qualify) or there may be a small charge if you have certain special circumstances. Only a few companies qualify with the US Government for the Federal Free program and naturally H&R Block is one of them.

Since I fall into the category of doing lots of tax returns, I download the H&R Block Tax Software and install it onto my computer. You get a certain amount of electronic filing credits to use if you want and qualify for electronic filing with the IRS, otherwise, print and mail.
