The Epson Perfection V600 Photo Color Scanner is one of the best choices to scan your photos that you have from your old film cameras, before digital photography was affordable for everyone.
How do I know?
Well the reviews are spectacular, but I also found a really nice write up about scanning your old photos over at Scan Your Entire Life.
Another individual actually did a large write up about his experience, and since he lives in New Zealand, could not get the Epson printer but was able to get another top choice scanner that he was very happy with – the Canon CanoScan 9000F Color Image Scanner.
Either of these scanners will do you quite well.
Do expect to spend some time if you have lots of photos (these guys have well over 1000 each). But it is worth it.
One question that you will likely ask, though, is where to store all of these photos? If you choose an online option, be sure to use a true online storage vendor and not just an online photo album (some online photo services do not allow you to download the same, high resolution, photo that you uploaded!).
An external hard drive is a good option for storing in your home provided you BACK THAT DRIVE UP to an online backup service that supports external hard drives.
Or, if you really want the best, use a home network attached storage device. Some vendors, like ReadyNAS, offer a photo album capability and unlike the external hard drive can protect your data with redundant hard drives (RAID) so that if a drive fails you don’t have to restore from you online backup service but merely replace the failed drive and even keep right on accessing it in the meantime (although I wouldn’t write new data until it’s repaired).
Where Are Those Old Photos Now?
If you are like us you probably have photo albums and even boxes of duplicate photos stored at home. Maybe you took the extra step with those really nice photos to store spares in a bank safe deposit box.
But because you treasure them you don’t get them out and enjoy them.
That needs to change, and can change now that it is economical and easy to scan your old photos. What is really cool is that these photo scanners come with powerful, easy to use software that can even perform advanced photo restoration tasks so that you can enjoy these old photos like never before.
Your new flat panel, 3D TV probably supports connecting to your home network, why not enjoy photos over the holidays and other get togethers?
Winter is a perfect time for projects like scanning photos, restoring those special few photos and organizing so that you can enjoy them all year around.
Check out these two photo scanners and see if one of them should be on your Christmas list.
