We are upgrading versions of Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security SMB and at the same time took the logical step of moving to a newer server. Trend Micro has been my vendor of choice for a comprehensive server-based SMB security suite for many years.
(Note: Just because I report on a problem or a frustration with a particular software or hardware does NOT mean I don’t continue to use and recommend said product – nothing is perfect!)
Unfortunately, you cannot use ipxfer.exe to transfer clients to a different server with a newer version! So we have to uninstall/reinstall the client software on each and every machine.
Most of the PC’s are Windows XP, and other than taking time, went without a hitch.
The Windows 7 PC’s, however, cannot access the internet after the upgrade.
After a few emails back and forth with Trend Micro it turns out their is a problem with the proxy dll, even though we are NOT using a proxy.
Here’s the temporary fix:
- Unload the client agent
- Open RegEdit
- Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TrendMicro\NSC\TmProxy\ProtocolHandler\http
- Double click “filename”
- Rename (just use tmphhttp_old.dll)
- Close RegEdit
Now reboot (or reload the agent) and the problem should be fixed.
In a follow up, Trend Micro sent me a newer dll to substitute, then I presume I will have to UNDO the registry change. Oh, well, I have NOTHING BETTER TO DO anyway (argh!)
Trend Micro support has provided a replacement DLL that I have not had a chance to test yet.
If you have a business of any size, small, medium or large enterprise, I do recommend protecting your servers, workstations, network & email with Trend Micro Worry Free Security (Advanced includes MS Exchange support).
